1. Setup & Features (5/10)
Founded in 2009, VyprVPN is probably one of the earliest VPN providers out there with more than two million users now.
As of today, it has more than 700 servers spread out across 70 countries.
You can install VyprVPN very easily in less than five minutes. All you have to do is sign up on their website where you can see the options on the left side for the apps that you want to download based on your device.
You can download VyprVPN on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, routers, and TVs. One thing that VyprVPN is lacking, though, is the ability to download an extension to browsers like Google Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.
Regardless, you can still subscribe to VyprVPN and use a maximum of five devices simultaneously which isn’t bad at all.
Unfortunately, VyprVPN no longer offers a free trial if you want to do a test drive first. Prior to July 2019, they have a three-day free trial but that is already phased out. What you can do is sign-up to any plan of your choice and get a refund within the first 30 days if you’re not satisfied using it. We’ll talk more about plans and pricing as we go along the article.
You can start trying VyprVPN features using its desktop app that you can download hassle-free. Once you are logged in, you have an option to connect to the fastest server based on your location but of course, you have all the freedom to choose from a variety of servers. In fact, you can also sort the servers based on their countries and speed, making it more convenient for you to connect to your desired location based on your needs.
If you want to get VyprVPN on your mobile phone instead, all you have to do is download it from Google Play for Android users or the App Store for iOS users. The mobile app looks the same as the desktop app. You can connect to the fastest server based on your location or choose from a long list of servers based on country, region, or speed.
If you want to disable VPN on trusted applications like your mobile banking apps, you can do so with VyprVPN’s feature called Connection Per App. It is a split tunneling feature common to all VPN providers where you can assign certain apps that will use or bypass the VPN every time you’re connected. However, this feature is not available in all of VyprVPN’s apps. It’s an exclusive feature for the Android app.
When it comes to the ease of use and its features, I have given VyprVPN a low rating of 5 out of 10 and here are the reasons why. I’ll start off by saying that it has the least number of servers among known VPN providers. Also, it is probably the VPN provider that allows the least number of devices you can use simultaneously. It also doesn’t have an extension for all browsers which is a feature that 90 percent of VPN providers have. It also stopped offering free trial and the split tunneling feature which could also be of big help for desktop apps and websites is only available on the Android app.
2. Speed (8/10)
Now, to check if VyprVPN has what it takes when it comes to connection speed and stability, I used Ookla to test the speed of four VPN servers from different countries but before that, I recorded my original Internet download speed which was 13.5 mbps. Next, I ran the speed test three times for each server to get the average mbps and here are the results.
First, I tested one server in Australia and got an average speed of 10.1 mbps. This is already a good speed for gaming, web surfing experience and for streaming HD videos and of course, it is close to my original speed which is impressive. The server in Canada recorded a faster speed than my original which is 14.9 mbps! The server in the United States recorded 9.9 mbps, and out of the four servers, the UK server has the slowest speed which is only at 7.5 mbps.
Based on my original speed, I can say that VyprVPN really proved here that it’s up for competition. These speeds aren’t the best, but considering my original speed, these results show close relation and very low percentage reduction in average. I have recorded only a 25.2 percent reduction in Australia, 44.4 percent in the UK, 26.7 percent in the U.S, and no speed reduction at all in Canada!
From my speed test reviews with other VPN providers, which you can also watch in my channel, I can conclude that VyprVPN, despite its shortcomings in terms of basic features, is a very strong competitor in terms of speed. So I have given it a rating of 8 out of 10.
3. Streaming & Torrenting (6/10)
Now, I have good and bad news when it comes to VyprVPN and Netflix. The good news is, similar to most VPN providers, you can absolutely unblock Netflix libraries using VyprVPN. The bad news is, it only allows you to unblock three libraries– U.S., UK, and Canada. I have tested it by searching for Criminal Minds, a show only available if you are in the United States, after connecting to the U.S. server. It worked perfectly and although there’s a few seconds of lag when I forwarded the movie, the quality is still good. Maybe that’s not so bad since these libraries are all rich in content but compared to its competitors, VyprVPN unblocks a lesser number of Netflix libraries.
Additionally, you can successfully unblock and stream on certain platforms such as HBO Now, Hulu, ESPN Plus, Amazon Prime, HBO Go, and DAZN.
Although VyprVPN and Netflix have their share of disappointing partnerships, it still proved to be a great choice for torrenting and surfing P2P-websites for file sharing. VyprVPN believes that all traffic should be treated equally that’s why this provider will absolutely be a good choice if you’re searching for a VPN that allows peer-to-peer and torrent traffics. It’s evident here where I connected to their U.S. server and the file I’m downloading in uTorrent didn’t get interrupted.
In the category of streaming and torrenting, I have given VyprVPN a rating of 6 out of 10 mainly because they can only unblock three Netflix libraries, and that’s a low number compared to most of its competitors. Still, the experience is good and the same goes for torrenting.
4. Jurisdiction, Security, Privacy (5/10)
While other VPN providers had their vulnerabilities in the past, causing records of hacking, VyprVPN remains unbreached since it was founded in 2009.
Exactly the thing we should expect from a VPN known evidently to be one of the pioneers of the no log policy. You heard it right, VyprVPN is the world’s first publicly audited no log VPN service. This means that as a user, they do not keep track and record of any of your online activities, credentials, and whereabouts.
Additionally, VyprVPN is based and operating under the Switzerland jurisdiction which isn’t a member of the Five Eyes, Nine Eyes or Fourteen Eyes alliances. In short, they don’t have any mandatory law for data retention so your information is safe with them.
Moving on, VyprVPN uses a 256-bit encryption to protect your traffic and make security penetration almost impossible, the standard and currently the longest encryption for website security.
It also has a selection of protocols that helps VPN safely send your data through the Internet. It offers WireGuard, IPsec, OpenVPN, and Chameleon. Each protocol varies in speed but WireGuard is known to be the future of VPN protocols because of its technological structure that offers the highest levels of speed, security and privacy. If you’re up to test WireGuard, VyprVPN is a great option. One thing that I think VyprVPN missed here is their ability to automatically choose the best protocol based on the server you are connected to, which is a feature most of its competitors are already doing.
Now, in cases where your VPN connection drops unexpectedly due to unstable internet connection or unexpected server and networking failure, VyprVPN will save you with its kill switch feature. Most of the time, the VPN will try to reconnect you after a disconnection, but leaks could already happen within these few seconds so the kill switch is designed to overcome this vulnerability. Kill switch makes sure to block all Internet and network traffic if the VyprVPN connection disconnects.
Additionally, to avoid sudden VPN connection malfunctions, VyprVPN has an automatic ad blocker feature that blocks ads, obviously, as well as trackers and malwares before they can even create a negative impact to your Internet connection.
Unfortunately, if you’re looking for Double VPN to add an extra layer of security since your data will be encrypted twice, VyprVPN won’t be a good option as they don’t offer it.
Neither do they offer the Dedicated or Static IP feature even as a paid add-on. This means that every time you connect to VyprVPN, you are using a shared IP with other users and your Internet footprints are hidden among your co-users’ online activities.
Now, I will do some testing to check if VyprVPN is really secure. Let’s start off with the IP Leak Test. Here, I used an IP leak test tool from ip leak dot org and as you can see, it showed my IP address first and the result of the IP leak test. We got a positive result here as it shows no leak detected, even on the second try.
Next, the DNS Leak Test. I will use a simple DNS leak tester in Google. Now, I’m connected to a US server. You will see that the DNS leak tester already identified our VPN location. I clicked on the standard test and it showed three IP addresses. According to the test guidelines, I should only see the only server I’m connected to which is Los Angeles but the result showed three servers I’m sure isn’t the city I connected to. Even on the second test, it showed the same results so this means that my DNS is really vulnerable with VyprVPN.
Moving on, we will check the exposure of my browser to WebRTC leaks while using VyprVPN. You will see this box with red warning texts that say WebRTC is not protected and my IP address is exposed to sites that I visit. I can conclude from here that VyprVPN app alone doesn’t make the cut to secure me from WebRTC leaks. Instead, what they suggest is installing plugins or extensions to prevent WebRTC leaks depending on your browser.
For example, you can install a free plugin called WebRTC Network Limiter when using Google Chrome, it will prevent any WebRTC or Chrome Extension leaks.
VyprVPN got a rating of 5 out of 10 for its privacy and security and features. The reasons why they lost five marks here are the fact that they don’t have an automatic protocol selection, they don’t offer a Double VPN and Dedicated IP feature, and they failed to pass the test for DNS and WebRTC leaks.
5. Support & Reliability (8/10)
When it comes to customer support, a quick note to mention is that they don’t provide phone support, so for anyone who is more comfortable speaking to a human being, you won’t be able to with VyprVPN. What they have are 24 7 email and live chat channels that I have both tried multiple times. VyprVPN’s live chat support features a series of references about your concern first but if you want, you can directly get a live person. In my experience here, Andy seems to be very proactive in giving out information but she actually didn’t probe more about my specific concerns about log policy. While she provided great references, it would have been better if she still avoided assumptions and asked me about my specific concern in the first place.
I also tried their email support and I got a response directly answering my question after roughly a day. This isn’t the fastest response, so if you have urgent questions, my suggestion is reach out to their live chat support.
Based on most of my experiences, VyprVPN seems to be reliable in supporting their customers so I will give them a passing rating of 8 out of 10 here. Although they can still improve in their response speed on email inquiries.
6. Pricing (7/10)
Now, let’s talk about the pricing plans. VyprVPN offers a one-month subscription for $12.95. The monthly price will be heavily discounted if you choose to subscribe for a longer period. If you pick up a one-year plan, you will only pay $45. Technically, the monthly fee has now been reduced to only $3.75, saving you roughly 71 percent. If you choose the three-year plan, you will only have to pay $60. Now, this really decreased the monthly price down even further to just $1.66, saving you 87 percent! So if you have the budget and are happy with the performance within 30 days of testing out VyprVPN, I always recommend you to buy the longest plan as this will save you so much money.
Currently, you can pay via credit card or Paypal. Unfortunately, VyprVPN doesn’t accept cryptocurrency as a payment method which is a miss for people who want to be more anonymous in purchasing this VPN. Another thing that defeats the purpose of total anonymity is the fact that you have to provide your full name on the orders page.
When it comes to refund, you are liable for their 30-day money-back guarantee. Regardless of your subscription, you can get a full refund within 30 days if you’re not satisfied with VyprVPN. All you have to do is contact them through chat or email and request a refund.
VyprVPN has its fair share of good and bad when it comes to pricing. It offers the most expensive one-month subscription fee but it also has one of the biggest discounts offered for longer plans. However, if you want to pay using bitcoins, you can’t do so with VyprVPN. That’s why I have given it just a passing rating of 7 out of 10.
Recommendation (6.5/10)
As a summary, I gave VyprVPN a rating of 6.5 out of 10. VyprVPN might have started great but through the years, many VPN providers have emerged to be probably more worthy of your budget. Still, VyprVPN is a good choice if you need a speedy VPN where you can unblock major Netflix libraries and do torrenting. Other than that, you have to really decide what your needs are so you can pick out the best VPN provider for you out of the bunch.
In general, I recommend ExpressVPN as the best overall VPN software because of its top-tier features and benefits. If your sole purpose for getting VPN is streaming, then I believe you and NordVPN would make a perfect match with their blazing fast speeds. And lastly, If you want to begin with the cheapest VPN and get the most bang for your buck, then SurfShark will be your best choice. More information on these three VPN providers is in the description if you are interested.
If you are already confident in starting today, feel free to click the link in the description to select your VyprVPN package with the best discount. But if you think VyprVPN is not right for you, then this VPN alternative would definitely be the one I recommend you strongly consider. I’ll see you over in that next article.
